Why are they so young? Interesting question. They aren't always so young, but it's definitely a trend. I think there's probably a combination of access to guns, teenage angst, access to guns, internet-incel-culture stuff, access to guns, performative rebellion bullshit, access to guns and access to guns that a lot of people grow out of, or at least develop a degree of self-control over that make it happen less once men are out of their early 20s.
Of course, access to guns is also responsible for the many more deaths that happen from suicide, domestic violence and gang crime in the US. But the highly visible and completely random shooting spree things seem to come almost exclusively from young white men and boys.

Teenagers are dangerous fuckers. Hitler youth were notoriously vicious in battle, but when captured they usually broke down and started crying. If teenagers didn't have access to guns they'd at least be limited to knives and clubs and stuff.
