I hate finding that I agree with Baloo. But I do here. If you arrive and claim asylum the country should treat you as a refugee, as someone who is fleeing persecution where it's not safe to stay in your home country. You should be housed in good conditions, rapidly and fairly processed and your actual claims to persecution tested. The country should be fairly liberal with that understanding because if your life is borderline at risk it's better to let you in. But if you are determined to not be fleeing persecution and instead have come here to do jobs nobody else wants, then you're lying. And that doesn't help anyone. Britain should, of course, have easier access for economic migrants and completely free access for EU citizens as in the past. The flow of labour should be much freer and require way less obstruction. But you absolutely mustn't treat political refugees as people coming for a gig. |
