The word "Paki" is offensive according to the link before my post. Is it considered officially offensive though?! Surely it depends on the tone and context?!

Ahhh ... not up to date with urban slang. It seems that p o o n is the slang name for female sex parts, particularly a little girl's.
Oh well, spaced writing looks to be the order of the day when that letter groupng comes up.

One's chum Sooty: After the Harry 'Paki' row, the royals' non-PC name for a polo pal By Rebecca English and Dan Newling Last updated at 12:35 AM on 14th January 2009 Comments (60) Add to My Stories Clubmates: Charles and Mr Dhillon It has been an uncomfortable few days for the Royal Family over issues of race. But as the row over Prince Harry using the word 'Paki' to describe a military colleague raged on, it emerged that an Indian polo-playing friend of the Prince of Wales and his sons is known to them as 'Sooty'. The friend in question is multi-millionaire businessman Kuldip Singh Dhillon, who plays with the three princes at Cirencester Park Polo Club close to Highgrove, Charles's Gloucestershire home. According to members, Mr Dhillon has been 'affectionately' known as Sooty 'for as long as anyone can remember'. Last night he issued a statement, denying the heir to the throne is in any way racist. 'I have to say that you know you have arrived when you acquire a nickname,' he said. 'I enjoy being called Sooty by my friends who I am sure universally use the name as a term of affection with no offence meant or felt. 'The Prince of Wales is a man of zero prejudice and both his sons have always been most respectful.' Described by friends as 'genial' and 'utterly charming', 58-year-old Mr Dhillon - who uses the name Kolin socially - has known Charles for more than 20 years. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1113922/Ones-chum-Sooty-After-Harry-Paki-row-royals-non-PC-polo-pal.html

p o o n is one of those slang words brought home from the Vietnam War veterans it is derived from the Vietnamese word "poontang" meaning female genitalia. "Gonna get me some poontang" ....etc

I'd never heard of it. I don't think it made it over to this side of the pond.

Prince Harry 'is not a racist' says soldier he called 'Paki' Ahmed Raza Khan says "no hard feelings" after racist video. Soldier called 'Paki' by Prince Harry insists there are 'no hard feelings' after apology The soldier who was called a "Paki" by Prince Harry in a leaked video has defended the actions of the Prince. Speaking for the first time about the incident, Ahmed Raza Khan, a captain in the Pakistan Army, denied the Prince was racist. He also revealed, in an interview with the Sun newspaper, that Prince Harry had personally phoned him to apologise but said he had "no hard feelings". The 24-year-old said: "The Prince called me by a nickname which is usually very insulting, but I know he didn't mean it that way. He phoned me to apologise and I have no hard feelings. We need to close this chapter now. "When I spoke to Harry he told me he never meant what people may think about the so-called nickname and I believe him. "We were close friends when we were training and I know he is not a racist. I have no reason to take up the issue again. "Since he has apologised, I would say, let bygones be bygones." Prince Harry and the other cadets were on their way to exercises in Cyprus when he made the racist comment during filming in the airport departure lounge. Captain Khan was one of 440 elite cadets from his country chosen to spend 10 months training alongside Harry at Sandhurst military academy, between 2005 and 2006. He said: "I was never made to feel uncomfortable because of my colour. I made lots of good friends. We all respected each other and that's what our training was about – to make us good human beings and good officers. "When I went to Sandhurst I didn't know I would be training with Prince Harry but when I met him, it was a good feeling. He is a really nice guy." www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/theroyalfamily/4276705/Soldier-called-Paki-by-Prince-Harry-insists-there-are-no-hard-feelings-after-apology.html

This proves it's been blown up out of all proportion and similarly the story at the moment with Charles saying Sooty! It is quite obvious neither Harry or Charles meant anything rascist by their remarks, both comments were directed at friends who were not offended. That is all that matters surely! If they had been offended, it would have been a completely different issue.

I agree Libby. It was all a ploy to make Harry look like hes a racist by the person who gave the vid to the papers

Do you think anyone really thinks Harry is rascist though cos i don't. I think most people will just think the papers are making an issue out of nothing.

Why couldn't Harry have said "Pakistani guy", like most other normal human beings....hang on...he was the prince who wore a Nazi uniform, was he not?.... that figures Harry didn't mean to use the word Paki in an offensive way, it was directed to a friend who wasn't offended by it. I completely agree that he was wrong to wear the Nazi uniform as that would cause enormous offence. vania is right about the word Paki having offensive connotations and that it is not a word to be banded around foolishly. I also agree about the lack of knowledge regarding knowing whether a person is Indian, Sri Lankan or Bangladeshi. I personally wouldn't have a clue?!

So, if an illegitimate person is called a bastard what category does that term come under? My mother wasn't married and I got a lot of abuse as a result because I was born in the late 1940's. No point getting offended.
