Regrettably, it has now emerged that the sleepporker has been spared on health grounds.

That's a shame because it smells bad. This would have only worked if we had had a closely considered legal opinion which we would have had to respect. This is the worst possible outcome because it adds to a growing sense that our judiciary are venal.

I think the "health" grounds are that the US prison system is dodgy as f**k. Which is fair. It would be good if the UK extradition regime applied this across the board for all extraditions to the US, to apply some more marginal pressure. The same way that they do when it comes to death penalty cases.

It would have been much better if he'd be protected because blabbing on war crimes is fine and nobody should be prosecuted for revealing war crimes, even if they're vile creepy sex-pests. In an ideal world he'd be rotting in a Swedish jail for rape and we'd never hear from or about him again.

True, but I would prefer the judge to have said that he's not going because there's no case to answer on the grounds of x, y or z. As it is, it reeks of diplomatic fudge.

If he was as innocent as you still cling to, why did he run and hide for 5 years in a closet, surely a man of conviction would have strode boldly into a Swedish court and stared down his accusers.
