In a prelude to them canceling all federal protection for woman striving to keep their bodily autonomy rights intact, last night the court upheld Texas in its bid to effectively ban all terminations. The Texas law enables vigilantes to go after anyone involved from the Dr, any staff in the clinic, a rape councilor who might council a rape victim who is impregnated by her attacker, the woman herself anyone she talked to about it, the person who drives her there, any one at all could be targeted by vigilantes who can sue them, if they don't defend themselves, the court automatically awards $20k compo and costs against anyone targeted, so forcing them to try and defend themselves in expensive multiplelawsuits. This is more than just an attack on women's bodily autonomy its a vigilantes charter. In an age of utterly scummy and disgusting policies from the right, this must top the lot. Stay away from Texas. Or is it a national thing?

The 20 million people in Texas can't so easily stay away from it. Particularly the under-18s who are going to be most affected by this.
It's also going to get worse - because if Texas is allowed to do this then every Republican state will try and pass it and it'll be 100 million plus people.
The most f**k*d up thing is that for lots of people in East Texas, their closest place to get an abortion - particularly after six weeks - will be New Orleans. Yet anyone tells them that, or drives them there, they are liable for a $10,000 fine. And the crazies in Texas now get a bounty for letting the authorities know if someone's abetting an abortion.

By October Roe vs Wade is expected to be struck down, so in every backwards shithole in the US there will be no bodily autonomy for women allowed, and this Teaxs law will roll out to these backwards red states so even if a woman seeks termination services in the civilized portion of the US they and anyone they know can be targeted by vigilantes from accross the country.

They are in hock to the religious extremists, the right are hostages the Ya'll Quieda who are the only ones they get to vote for them, having lost the ability to be a national majority party the GOP has largely become a single issue party for a while, this has been Moscow Mitches long term plan, pack the court with Talibanesk judges and put women back to the middle ages.

“ The lack of judicial intervention means that the law -- which is one of the strictest in the nation and bans abortion before many people know they are pregnant -- goes into force absent further court intervention.
The law allows private citizens to bring civil suits against anyone who assists a pregnant person seeking an abortion in violation of the ban.”
On a matter of principle how could anybody remotely decent live in that state. Even if you are convinced you would never / could never seek an abortion this is such a backwards ruling....
I would say this is why I could never live in the USA but this is Texas - I am deeply aware of how diverse the US is. Why don’t they just outright ban abortion as that is basically what this law does.

Out of interest / does this mean a Texan woman who travels to another state for an abortion can be prosecuted on her return?

has the nurse been triggered? You think caring about women’s bodily autonomy is “being triggered”? You’re telling on yourself.

Yes a woman traveling to a more civilized state can indeed be persecuted on her return to Texas, she could be targeted by numerous law suits aimed at driving her, and anyone she may have talked to or asked assistance from, to destitution.

The ironic thing is it's the same people telling us its against personal liberty to deliver a wedding cake, but not a rapists baby.

Any figures for abortion in Texas? Are kids being flushed down the toilet in their thousands every day? In an ideal world abortions wouldn't be necessary, and I hate to think that some women use the services like a morning after pill... but this new law is abominable.

I've just read through this thread and in the immortal words of our own dear Prince of Wales: "This really is appalling!"
